Research Studies Currently Active in the Trust
Research studies can be divided into two categories,
- those that are initiated and led by Trust staff members and honorary appointees, and for which the Trust often provides financial support and/or acts as formal sponsor; and
- other local, national and international projects that recruit participants from within our Trust.
Within these categories the studies are organised into three types:
1. Studies on the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Portfolio. In England, the Department of Health has determined that studies (clinical trials and other well designed studies which involve the NHS) that are funded by NIHR, other areas of Government, and NIHR non-commercial Partners are automatically eligible to be included in the Portfolio. NIHR Partners are those organisations that:
- award research funds as a result of open competition across England with high quality peer review
- fund research that is of clear value to the NHS
- take account of DH and NHS priorities and needs in their research funding strategies.
In addition other studies, such as commercially sponsored studies or those with industry funding which are led by an academic investigator, may be considered for inclusion in the Portfolio by undergoing an adoption process.
2. Own Account projects are those studies not included on the NIHR Portfolio, either because they are not supported by external funding or because their funding has been obtained from a source which is not an NIHR Partner.
3. Studies undertaken as an educational project, usually in fulfilment of a Masters or Doctoral thesis requirement.
