Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapists (SLT) offer help to people of all ages who have communication difficulties.

Service include:

  • assessment
  • diagnosis
  • treatment
  • advice
  • information
  • assessment and advice regarding swallowing problems

Communication difficulties may be a lifelong problem or may be the result of an illness such as stroke. SLT staff work directly with the person experiencing these difficulties and work with parents and carers to help them understand the nature of the problem and how they can help.

SLT staff provide training to other professional and care staff to help them to identify those people who will benefit from SLT and to help to maximise communication with them.

Many of the problems which cause communication difficulties cannot be cured, so SLT staff work to:

  • prevent problems arising
  • support clients in achieving their communication potential
  • contribute to rehabilitating clients after illness
  • maintain communication skills in degenerative illnesses.

Bilingual co-workers with knowledge of SLT work within the team to help people who speak Bengali, Gujerati, Punjabi and Urdu to access the service.
