School Aged Children

The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service won the 2011 Shine-A-Light Team of the Year Award for Children's Speech & Language Therapy.

The Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) team work in schools, with school staff, to help children with communication difficulties. As children get older it is important for them to learn language and communication skills as part of their school day.

We may suggest these ways of giving extra help to children:

  • Giving advice and communication strategies to school staff and parents.
  • Setting up a programme of therapy for school staff to carry out which is designed and co-ordinated by the therapist.
  • Helping school staff to run language groups to develop children's spoken language skills.
  • Giving activities to parents which will help their children.
  • Providing a period of direct therapy.
  • SLT specialist staff also offer ways of helping children who have difficulties in eating/drinking and swallowing.

Children may be transferred to this SLT team if they have already been seen for therapy before they entered year one in school, or they may be referred by parents or by school staff with parental permission.
