This service is for people aged 16 and over who are admitted to Newham University Hospital. The service covers patients referred from medical, surgical, orthopaedic, elders, stroke, hands and other specialities.
In-patient occupational therapists work with people who experience difficulties with everyday activities during a hospital admission. Such activities might include going to the toilet, eating, getting washed and dressed. The occupational therapists also work with in-patients who are likely to have difficulty after discharge in carrying out these essential activities, including preparing meals and drinks.
Occupational therapy assessment and treatment is provided in hospital and home environments. The aim of in-patient occupational therapy is to enable people to achieve maximum independence and a safe and timely discharge from an in-patient stay.
If a person has an ongoing need for occupational therapy treatment after discharge from an in-patient stay s/he will be referred to the appropriate community team.
Referrals are accepted from health professionals working in the hospital setting. Patients can be referred using the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system.
