Acute in-patient services

The In-patient Physiotherapy Service offers comprehensive treatment programmes for rehabilitation of clients following trauma, surgery, disease and degenerative conditions.

The aim of the service is to provide a high quality service to users, and working alongside staff from other professions to facilitate clients’ progress to a safe and optimum level of function. If clients require further care after discharge, this is arranged with other agencies, it may involve treatment as an outpatient or in the community.

The service is divided into three teams:
  • Care of the elderly and mental health:
The care of the elderly team are based at Newham General Hospital and provide care to patients aged over 65 with a variety of medical conditions. Adult and elderly mental health patients are also assessed and treated at the North East London Mental health Unit.
  • Respiratory and critical care:
The respiratory inpatients team see patients with a variety of conditions within the hospital, including medical and surgical wards, intensive care and paediatrics. Treatments will vary depending on the severity of the illness and the patients’ level of ability.
Pulmonary rehabilitation classes for people with chronic lung conditions are run within the hospital and in the community. The team also assess and treat outpatients with other respiratory conditions.
  • Orthopaedics:
The orthopaedic team treat a variety of conditions e.g. joint replacements, fractures and ligament repairs for both adults and children. A weekend service is provided to enable early mobilisation after surgery and facilitate discharge. After discharge, patients may be seen in the community to further improve their mobility. Elective patients are encouraged to attend post-surgical rehabilitation classes to maximise their functional capability.
Access/referrals:

People are usually referred to the service by their consultant or GP, but referrals can also be made by other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Each person is involved in their own assessment and a plan of care is agreed, this may include exercises to be done with nursing staff, family members or alone, as well as treatment with the physiotherapist.

Waiting times for both assessment and treatment vary according to the clinical diagnosis and the determined priority of the condition.

An emergency on-call service is provided out of normal working hours (0830 – 1630) for critically ill patients.

We also provide cover from Monday to Sunday (0830 – 1630) to facilitate discharges on orthopaedics wards and in the Accident and Emergency Department.
